Para: Inside the Parachute Regiment,
Claire Gillian, Simon Walker
Review:
Who are the men who wear the maroon beret? Journalist Claire Gillman and
photographer Simon Walker spent eighteen months finding out. They were
given unprecedented access to the private and working lives of the Paras,
accompanying 5 Airborne Brigade on trips ranging from stark patrols of
South Armagh to training in the steamy jungle of Central America; following
every aspect of their daily existence from the full ceremony of a regimental
dinner to the raucous off-duty drinking sessions in the pubs of Aldershot;
and witnessing the rare and precious moments of family life. Claire Gillian
investigates what it is that prompts a man to put himself through the
most difficult selection process in the world knowing that only a quarter
of those who start will get through. The Paras are revealed as men of
burning ambition, who push themselves to the limit of their physical and
mental endurance and beyond, who adhere to a strict code of conduct and
of honour and develop an esprit de corps which is hard for outsiders to
penetrate. As a woman in a man's world, Claire Gillian found that many
soldiers confided things in her that they might not have shared with another
man. Her text is further illuminated by more than 100 of Simon Walker's
candid and dramatic photographs. In "Para", we come as close
to understanding the members of this close-knit regiment as we are likely
to get.

Para: Fifty Years of The Parachute Regiment,
Peter Harclerode, Cassell Military.
Review:
This is an illustrated history of one of our most celebrated elite forces,
commemorating their first 50 years of operations. From their early World
War II exploits, when airborne forces were a novel, untried strategy,
through the activities of the Parachute Regiment in the bushfire wars
of the end of the Empire, to their outstanding work in Northern Ireland,
the Falklands and their deployment in the Gulf War, the story of the Paras
is told in readable detail, including many first-hand accounts. The illustrative
content includes colour art by top military artists and recent shots of
the Paras at work.

Airborne Assault: Parachute Forces in Action 1940-91
Bruce Quarrie
Review:
The word "paratrooper" conjures up images of dare-devil courage.
During World War II both sides used these small, highly trained bands
of soldiers and, post-1945, they have been deployed in operations from
Malaya, Borneo and Indochina to Radfan, Suez, the Falklands and Grenada.
In August 1990, the Americans initially sent an airborne division to the
Gulf to act as an immediate psychological check pending the arrival of
stronger forces. This book looks at the history of parachute regiments
- who they are, how they are recruited, their individual track records
and how necessary they are today. It details paratroop history up to 1991,
describes the organization and composition of all the world's airborne
units, training methods, principal types of parachute, glider and transport
aircraft. Bruce Quarrie is the author of "Hitler's Teutonic Knights",
"Hitler's Samurai" and "Weapons of the Waffen-SS".

Paras: An Illustrated History of Britain’s
Airborne Forces
HRH Prince Charles (Foreward), David Reynolds
Review:
The maroon beret of Britain's airborne forces has a special significance
to every man who has ever worn it, from the wartime units of 1st and 6th
Airborne Divisions to the parachute soldiers of today. Supported by a
host of specialist units from within the British Army, the modern airborne
soldiers have become a household name and are better known as the "Paras".
Since their creation in June 1940, Britain's airborne forces have been
called on to carry out some of the most difficult military operations
in recent history, often destined to result in loss of life for the regiment.
From Arnhem to Ulster they have always been in the front line of the action,
winning 31 battle honours and hundreds of bravery decorations, including
eight Victoria Crosses. This guide tells the story of the birth of the
Parachute Regiment during World War II and its rapid development into
one of the British Army's pre-eminent fighting regiments. Today they are
Britain's "fire-brigade" shock troops, trained in hostage rescue.
As part of the UK's Joint Rapid Deployment Force (JRDF), they are on permanent
stand-by to react to the unexpected anywhere in the world, in a tradition
echoed by their regimental motto, "Ready for Anything".

British Airborne Forces of the 90’s (Europa
Militaria)
Ted Nevill, Michael Roberts
Review:
This volume covers the organization, operational roles, weapons, equipment,
uniforms, of the Parachute Regiment and its supporting arms in the Airmobile
Brigade. Compiled with the full co-operation of Airborne Forces, with
access to many units as they go about their duties, the book's scope embraces
everything, from the horrors of recruit selection and basic training to
major combat exercises. At a time of great changes for the British Army,
and unpredictable developments around the world, it explains and illustrates
the tasks of the Para of the 1990s, and how he is being prepared to fulfil
them.

Arnhem – The Bridge: 2nd Parachute Battalion
(Battleground)
Frank Steer
Review:
In the second of his two Battleground guides to the epic struggle put
up by the British and Polish paratroopers at Arnhem, Frank Steer concentrates
on the battle in the town itself and particularly for the vital bridge.
Seized at a comparatively early stage, the bridge became the focus for
prolonged and vicious fighting. Cut off from further reinforcement by
the furious Germans, the small garrison, led by the redoubtable Colonel
John Frost, waged an increasingly desperate struggle for survival against
overwhelming odds, hoping against hope that 30 Corps would arrive in time.
As is well known they did not. The fact that this battle was lost and
the bold aims of Market Garden were not fully achieved in no way diminished
the extent of the achievement of the Paras. Indeed it has added to their
glory.
